There’s a unique magic in witnessing the early weeks of a litter of Russian Blue kittens. Their arrival brought an immediate sense of delight to our home—tiny bundles of silvery blue fur, blinking up at the world with wide, curious eyes. Now, just weeks later, I find myself marvelling at how swiftly these little ones are growing and how their world is expanding both in size and spirit.
Feeding Time
In what feels like the blink of an eye, those once-wobbly legs have gained strength and confidence. Where they used to huddle close together in their cosy blanket bed, the kittens are now tumbling bravely out into the wider world of our bedroom. Their movements, still a touch clumsy at times, are increasingly bold as they test the limits of their tiny bodies and the boundaries of the space around them.
Watching the kittens at play is pure joy. They chase after the simplest things—a crumpled bit of paper, an errant shoelace, or each other’s twitching tails. Often, they’ll pounce and tumble in a soft grey blur, letting out squeaky mews of excitement. It’s remarkable how quickly they learn, develop their coordination, and begin to invent their own little games. Sometimes, a leap is just a tad too ambitious, resulting in a comical sprawl, but they’re never discouraged. Within moments, one is up again, scampering after a sibling or investigating a patch of sunlight on the carpet.
The close-knit connection between the kittens is a heartwarming sight. They’re rarely far from one another, always ready for a bit of wrestling or a cuddle. When their energy finally wanes, they pile up together in a purring heap, their coats blending into a silvery blue mound of contentment. The older they get, the more their individual personalities shine through—one might be especially adventurous, another more contemplative, but all are irresistibly endearing.
Exhausted after running riot
Each day brings new milestones. Their leaps are higher, their curiosity deeper, and their play more inventive. Though their kittenhood feels fleeting, these moments of play and wonder will become cherished memories for years to come.
There’s something truly enchanting about watching a litter of kittens find their paws and begin to explore the world. Over the past weeks, we’ve had the privilege to witness Cara, our ever-dedicated feline mum, carefully nurture her tiny brood through their earliest days, all snug in their kittening box. But now, the winds of change (or should I say, the scampering of paws) are picking up in our household!
First Steps: The Kittens Gain Confidence
It seemed only yesterday that the kittens were content to huddle together in a warm, purring heap, eyes tightly shut, utterly dependent on Cara for everything. Now, their eyes have opened to a world filled with new sights, sounds, and smells. With wobbly legs and twitching whiskers, each kitten has begun to take those first fateful steps, their curiosity leading them to bump into one another and the sides of the box alike.
It’s a joy to watch as they tentatively paw at each other, experimenting with the art of play for the first time. Each day, they grow a little bolder, their movements steadier, and their mews a touch more insistent. It’s clear that the once cosy kittening box is quickly becoming a tad too snug for their adventurous spirits.
Cara’s Instincts: Making the Move
Cara, ever the attentive mum, has noticed her kittens’ burgeoning need for space and stimulation. True to her feline instincts, she began making subtle preparations for a move. It started with frequent inspections of the room, sniffing out the safest, cosiest corners. Then, one by one, she gently picked up each kitten by the scruff and relocated them from the kittening box to a new spot — the quiet corner of the room, away from any draughts and bustling feet.
Watching Cara carry out this task with such care and determination was nothing short of remarkable. She seemed to know exactly when the time was right, ensuring her little ones had enough warmth, privacy, and room to roam but still remained within her vigilant gaze.
Unaware of their new bedthere is always one brave enough to take the first leap!
Discovering Their New World
The move to the corner has opened up a whole new world for the kittens. Here, there’s more space for them to test their balance and coordination, more shadows to chase, and plenty of opportunities for mischief. While some kittens were quick to scurry off and explore, others lingered closer to mum, taking their time to adjust to their new environment.
It’s been a delight to see the kittens’ personalities begin to shine. From the boldest explorer to the shy observer, each kitten is taking this next step in their development at their own pace, with Cara always nearby, ready to offer a comforting nuzzle or a playful swipe of her tail.
Looking Ahead
As the days go by, I’m sure the kittens will become even more adventurous, their confidence growing with every step. For now, the simple act of watching them tumble about is a daily reminder of the incredible bond between mother and kittens — and the joy that comes with witnessing new life as it unfolds.
A huge welcome to the latest additions to our Ruiseanach family.

A year ago today, our house was filled with the tiniest mews, kneading paws, and the awe-inspiring sight of our very first Ruiseanch Russian Blue litter. As we mark their first birthday, it’s impossible not to reflect on the extraordinary journey these kittens — and we — have taken together.
From Newborn Whiskers to Elegant Cats
It feels like only yesterday that the kittens were nestled close to Cara, their mother, with their eyes tightly shut. Watching them open their eyes for the first time, wobble through their initial steps, and eventually bound about the house with endless curiosity has been nothing short of magical. Each kitten displayed their own unique quirks and personalities.
Milestones: A Year in Review
First Purrs: The gentle rumbling started within weeks, as they found comfort in our laps and arms.
Weaning and Exploration: With the guidance of their patient mother, they explored new tastes, discovered toys, and staked out favourite napping spots.
Playful Antics: We quickly learned to keep our shoelaces tied, as these kittens were relentless in their pursuit of anything that moved!
Choosing Their New Owners
As the kittens grew, the time came to seek out loving homes that would cherish them as much as we do. We were careful to select people who understood the needs and spirited nature of our precious babies, ensuring that each kitten would receive the affection and attention they deserved. Meeting the prospective owners and witnessing the instant bonds formed was deeply rewarding, reaffirming our belief that these special cats would bring joy wherever they went.

Achray, (Dexter or Dex) one of the most mischievous of the bunch, has truly settled into his new life in Edinburgh. We love receiving updates about his antics and it is pretty clear that he’s quickly become lord of the manor, perching regally on windowsills, surveying and harness walking in his garden and acquainting himself with all the local wildlife.

Arkaig, (Laddie) meanwhile, has taken up residence near Stoke and has made quite a name for himself as a show cat. He holds the distinction of being the first ever titled Ruiseanach, a testament to his owners and his charming temperament. His achievements continue to make us proud, and we eagerly follow his progress in the show circuit.

A Litter at a few days old
Wishing all of our A litter the happiest of birthdays! It’s a joy to see how far each one has come and how much happiness they continue to bring into their new homes. Here’s to another year of purrs, play, and adventures—may they all be spoiled with extra cuddles and treats on their special day.
Another first for us as we celebrated success at the Cheshire Area Show Cat Show on Saturday 20th September 2025.
At the show
We are delighted to announce that Alvie has become our very first Ruiseanach GCCF Champion, marking a significant milestone for us. Her title was awarded at the Cheshire Area Show.
This achievement would not have been possible without the discerning eyes and expertise of the judges: Rosemary Fisher, Sue Danks, and Maria Chapman-Beer. We extend our heartfelt thanks to them for their awards.
Alvie took it all in her stride by sleeping through it all, after keeping us awake all night wanting to play, proving that even champions need their rest – as do her humans!
Congratulations to Alvie for this remarkable accomplishment and to everyone involved in her journey to becoming our first Ruiseanach Champion.
